Take It Or Leave It | Dutch Design Week | Eindhoven 22 - 30 October 2011
The cultural field and the design scene within it are going through turbulent times, triggered by the current economic crisis. In order to understand better what it is that we are facing, The Van Abbemuseum would like to concentrate in the coming Dutch Design Week on the ties and links between economy and design. The project Take It or Leave It / Design Economics would focus on the inevitable changes, resulted by the severe governmental cuts the design community is about to meet in the near future. The Van Abbemuseum invited designers to participate in part of the project dedicated to the discussion on governmental subsidies for design and designers.
Take It or Leave It is a research project, a collection of manifestations and actions which comprise the Van Abbemuseum’s contribution to this year’s Dutch Design Week. The project questions the reciprocal relationship between economy and design, in the past and in light of recent developments.
The museum we will present a visual survey which aims to lay out the connections between designed objects and public funding, using it as a platform for public discussions. the Van Abbemuseum will end the week with an addition of Sarah Vanhee’s performance: The Great Public Sale of Unrealized but Brilliant Ideas, wherein guests are offered to become the proud owner of unrealized (but brilliant!) ideas envisioned by designers and artists.
