Super | Design That Thinks | Lecce 17 May - 12 July 2009
The exhibition DESIGN THAT THINKS is a side exhibition of "SUPER - Neo-barock paths between art and design". DESIGN THAT THINKS is a selection of Design Academy Eindhoven recent and past works which will be framed within the context of ethical design curated by alumni Giovanni Innella and Agata Jaworska.
Form-giving is the Dutch word for design, but design has meaning beyond shape, material and technique. Within the exhibition "SUPER - Neo-barock paths between art and design", edited by Marco Petroni, DESIGN THAT THINKS presents works which show how matter is linked to broader implications and possibilities, and that decisions surrounding a design, are indeed ethical. Confronting issues such as the human relationship to nature, contemporary possibilities for luxury, working conditions within the factory, the human desire to consume and possibilities of local materials, present and past work of the Design Academy Eindhoven show that designers not only need to design with form and aesthetics, but also, with a conscience.
DESIGN THAT THINKS will be exhibited next to pieces from the DROOG collection, by Jurgen Bey, Marijn van der Poll and Marcel Wanders. Projects by the Brazilian duo Humberto and Fernando Campana and Italian designers Fabio Novembre and Riccardo Dalisi will provide perspectives on tradition, contradictions between social classes and popular culture. Discussions and workshops will mediate the exhibitions, with the coordination of Stefano Mirti, who is responisible for the section called Compasso di Latta, a project created by Riccardo Dalisi and school NABA-Milano.
